10 Day Campervan Holiday Itinerary from Hobart

Day 1

From the Hobart Airport,  travel to Sorell (10 km) enroute to Port Arthur. Visit Woolworths Sorell to buy supermarket supplies ready for your Tassie holiday. Overnight at one of the numerous caravan parks in the Port Arthur area.


Day 2

Visit the Port Arthur Historic Site and Prison as well as go on the cruise to the Isle of the Dead. Head off to Nubeena and Tarana and visit the Wild Life Centre to see the Tasmanian Devils. Visit Eagle Hawk Neck where you can see how nature has created the Devils Kitchen and the Tasman Arch as well as visit the quaint Doo Town. This is only 5 minutes off the Tasman Highway. Head off to Orford for an overnight stay. If you are a keen bush walker and a lover of National Parks, Triabunna, just north of Orford, is where you catch the ferry to Maria Island. This would add an extra day to your itinerary.


Day 3

Travel to Freycinet National Park (Coles Bay) via Swansea. For those wine lovers visit the award winning Springvale Winery 10 km past Swansea.  The Illuka Caravan Park at Coles Bay is a great place to stay as there are Coffee Shops, Bakeries and a great Bistro within walking distance of the Park. There are some fantastic walks and a must is the walk to Wine Glass Bay. This is truly a fantastic view of nature’s wonderland. If you are a keen walker take the 4 hour walk and do the round trip back to the car park. You may like to go into the National Park in the evening and see the wildlife that inhabit the area. With regards to Illuka Caravan Park it is suggested in peak times that you book ahead.


Day 4

Head off to St Helens and visit Binnalong Bay and the Bay of Fires. This is truly a spectacular coastal area. Before leaving for Launceston visit Pyenghana Vintage Cheese Factory and have a refreshing drink at the Pub in the Paddock. This is approximately a 30 minute drive from St Helens. Head for Scottsdale and if in season (Jan – March) go via Lilydale/Lalla and see the Lavender Farm and then on to Launceston or visit the many wineries in the Pipers Brook or Tamar Valley area. Overnight at the Glen Dhu Caravan Park.

Day 5

An early start today as you leave to go to Cradle Mountain via the Bass Highway. Visit the Raspberry Farm 5 km before Elizabeth Town and then on to Sheffield (the town of murals) and a great spot for coffee.  Then on to Cradle Mountain which is in a National Park area and is a must see destination. Start off with a walk around Dove Lake. This is easy going and approximately 3 hours but scenery is majestic. On return from this walk divert to Waldheim Challet in the National Park, an interesting area to consider the founder of this Park. Have plenty of film in your camera as this is truly a wild life rich area. Note: there is no fresher air than here. The accommodation areas in Cradle Mountain have great food, huge log fires in the winter time and again the caravan park is a good area to stay. Ensure you wander in the area at night with the whole family as wild life is in abundance in the evenings.


Days 6 and 7

Head off to the fishing port of Strahan that is set on the quiet bay of Macquarie Harbour on Tasmanian’s historic and spectacular West Coast for your overnight stay. This beautiful spot must not be missed. Attractions in this area are the Abt Railway, one of the world’s great railway journeys  on a restored historic railway where the State and Commonwealth Government injected $36 million in 2001 to see this area come back to life. The other area is the half day cruise on the Gordon River. This is a must to see the beautiful reflections on the crystal clear water reflecting the untouched wilderness of this pristine heritage listed area. You will be amazed by the 1,000 year old huon pine at Heritage Landing. Also Ocean Beach is another spot to consider the wild seas that occur on the West Coast. Please note in peak times this is another area that is heavily booked for accommodation as well as cruise and railway excursions.


Day 8

Next morning venture off to Queenstown, a historic mining town where industry has left its mark on the landscape over the years and its worth a visit to the Mining Museum in this town. Then follow the Lyell Highway to Derwent Bridge. Visit Lake St Clair National Park before travelling on to New Norfolk for an overnight stay in the caravan park.


Day 9

Leave for Mt Field National Park and Russell Falls and on return call into Salmon Ponds at Plenty and then on to Hobart for an overnight stay.


Day 10

If a Saturday visit the Salamanca Market 8.00am to 3.00pm and then return to Hobart Airport for your return trip home.

There is a huge amount of places of interest that are not mentioned in this itinerary as we have only picked out the key places and key attractions for a 10 day stay. . Make sure you get information from every area so as to maximize things to do based on your level of interest. Maybe 20 days is not enough.
