The Schönbrunn Palace. Still in Vienna but worth mentioning in its own right as its Austria’s most popular tourist attraction. The palace was built as the summer residence of the Habsburgs, an immensely important family. The baroque building is now a concert venue, museum, a park and zoo.
Hofburg Imperial Palace. This is the home to the president of Austria, and the Lipizzaner stallions; not to be confused. These magnificent white stallions are part of the famous Spanish Riding School which is open to the public.
Grossglockner Alpine Road has to be one of the most beautiful roads in Europe and leads to Austria’s largest glacier, although rather bendy in places, the views are incredible.
The university city of Graz is a World Heritage Site due to its architectural centre; this is also one of those places which has some great nightlife.
Innsbruck is popular in both the summer and the winter. Situated between some huge mountains it’s the ideal spot for skiing and for walking.
The blue Danube, no doubt you will hear this performed if you visit one of the classical concerts in the area but the Danube valley is more than just a musical piece. The Danube is a very important river and the towns and villages along its banks are traditional and picturesque, take a boat down the river and enjoy some of the varied scenery.
The city of Salzburg has some magnificent buildings and museums dedicated to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It’s the home of the Mirabell Palace and the Hohensalzburg Fortress as well as being known as ‘the Rome of the North’ due to the huge amount of churches.
Just south of Salzburg are the Eisriesenwelt Caves. These caves are the world’s largest ice caves, so take something warm to wear.
Last but not least, you’ve guessed it, the ‘Sound of Music tour’. Visit all those places where the film was made, from the steps where the children sang Do-Ray-Me in the Mirabell Gardens to the Leopoldskron Castle which was used as the backdrop of the Von Trapp family home. The highlight of the tour will be your guide, someone dressed up as one of the characters and singing along to the tunes as you go!
