Whether you are staying in Salzburg for the day or for a few nights there are plenty of options for visitors with campervan hire or motorhome rental vehicles. There are two Aire de Service in the centre of the city near the Mirabell Gardens and another three on the outskirts. Of course you will be travelling around from Salzburg and there are a large number of Aires and camping sites all within easy reach with a variety of facilities.
Top things to see and do
Visit Salzburg’s Old Town. The Old Town is a World Heritage Site and you can see why, the narrow streets are magical. All the shops have ornate hanging metal signs and the streets have golden arches. Take a stroll up to the castle with excellent views of the city out towards the Alps and then return into the centre and visit Mozart’s House; there are a few to choose from!
One for the girls. The Mirabell Palace and Gardens are free and a great place to relax, however you may see some strange ‘goings on’. In amongst the beautiful flower beds you will discover the dwarf garden, it’s also where you will find people jumping off fountains and popping out from behind trees singing. You’ve guessed it; it’s the ‘Sound of Music’ again. The gardens were used as one of the filming locations; it’s where the children sang Do, Ray, Me, so people feel the need to re-live one of their favourite moments from the film. Join in if you wish.
One for the boys. Visit the Augustiner Bräu monastery, this monastery is special because it’s where the monks brew their own beer. There’s a beer garden or if the weather is chilly keep warm inside the huge semi-subterranean beer hall. You are invited to collect a stein off the dresser, wash it under the fountain and fill it up straight from the barrel. It doesn’t stop there, go through into the cavernous hall and get food from one of the stalls and sit at a wooden table. Now you want to be a monk!
Just for fun…Come in the wintertime and experience the Christmas Markets. If you come to Salzburg at the end of November or during December it may be a little chilly but this is a great place for a really Christmassy experience. The streets are filled with wooden huts selling traditional wooden toys and food. The best bit has to be the stalls selling every kind of variation of mulled wine, it’s spicy, strong and also happens to include liqueurs, well, it is cold outside. Stand in the street and drink in the atmosphere.
Salzburg is a historic but fun place to visit in a motorhome rental or campervan hire, it’s also a great starting point before venturing out into the rest of the country.
