Bay of Fundy Motorhome Holiday
If you're thinking of hitting the road in Canada this summer then you should definitely consider Nova Scotia as a destination. The type of place that has something for everyone--from nature lovers and history buffs to the sportsman and the surfer--the province is easy to navigate with an RV rental and is chalk full of interesting sights and experiences like the world famous Bay of Fundy.
Stretched between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick this ocean bay has the highest tides in the world. During every tide cycle over a billion tonnes of seawater moves in and out of the bay. Here you can experience some of the world's best fresh sea food, everything from lobster to mussels (try the Lobster Pound in Hall's Harbour). You will also be able to view Nova Scotia's famed lighthouses, as well as experience museums, hiking trails and a variety of parks. If you like you can hop on a Fundy ferry, which will take you from Digby, Nova Scotia to Saint John, New Brunswick in a matter of hours. This will allow you to get a great view of the bay area in both provinces and, if you're really lucky, you might even spot some marine life (read: whales!) while out on the water.
This area is home to approximately 300 whales and is a known spot for whale watching. Several whale watching tours leave from Digby daily and the best months for the activity are from June to September (locals say August is the ideal time to try your luck). There are several different types of vessels used for these types of tours. Zodiacs move fast in the water and offer a thoroughly unique whale watching experience while fishing boats and catamarans will provide you with better protection against the elements. In the Bay of Fundy you have the chance to spot Humpback, Blue and Beluga whales (as well as other types of whales) along with dolphins and harbour porpoises.
The Bay of Fundy also has some gorgeous rock formations and landforms created by the tides over the centuries. Most of these are located in the Sea Cliffs and Fossils Ecozone. In Nova Scotia you can check out the Five Islands Provincial Park, which boasts access to the beach and a variety of hiking trails, as well as the volcanic cliffs, rock headlands and rock columns in Cape D'Or (there is also a great lighthouse here), Cape Blomidon Provincial Park and Balancing Rock, Tiverton in Digby. Of course, if you make it to the Bay be sure to observe the tides--it really is amazing the amount of water that empties out during the cycle. The pictures below depict the phenomenon to give you some idea of what you would be in for.
