Cape Breton Motorhome Holiday

Gorgeous coastal landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, abundant culture and music, and ample opportunity for discovery and outdoor activities--Cape Breton offers all this and more. If you are on this Nova Scotia island you will be no further than a half hour drive from the sea in any direction and you can choose to take one of the established trails to discover the bounty of this area. Known as the "rock in the stream" Cape Breton offers many sightseeing opportunities and is the perfect spot to take a scenic drive with your Canadian RV rental.

So are you wondering if a trip to Cape Breton is for you and what, exactly, there is to see and do on this particular isle? The answer is: a lot. You can celebrate the birth of the telephone at the Alexander Graham Bell and Marconi Historic Sites or sun yourself on one of the island's many beaches (try the charming Black Brook Beach). Want to get your history on? Visit the oldest house in Sydney, now the Cossit House Museum, the Fortress of Louisbourg or Highland Village Museum. You can enjoy a boat or sailing tour (give Amoeba a try) or just soak up the music, food and culture of the island. Of course, there are also many parks, lakes and trails where you can participate in a multitude of outdoor activities or just relax with a picnic and a good book.

To make exploring the region easier Cape Breton has been divided into five scenic areas that you can discover using established "trails," the most famous of which is the Cabot Trail. Many call this the world's greatest road trip. We're talking great views, Celtic music, hiking, whale watching, fishing and kayaking. You will find picturesque villages like Cheticamp (pick up a hooked rug while you're in town), great golf (try the Highland Links Golf Course) and beautiful national parks like the Cape Breton Highlands. You can participate in the Festival of Cape Breton Fiddling or Lobsterpalooza, stop for great pictures (the French, MacKenzie and North Mountain roadside Look-Offs are you best bets) as well as get in some good eating and great shopping.

You will find communities like Inverness, Port Hastings, Lake Ainslie and Mabou (it is thought that this area of the island was once joined with Norway and Scotland) along the Ceilidh Trail. It's pronounced kay-lee and is a trail through the Cape Breton highlands, which are filled with culture from Scottish settlers as well as Celtic folk history. Along this drive your eyes will be assaulted by natural beauty--everything from rugged rock formations to shimmering bays and rolling green hills. You will want to stop at gorgeous Broad Cove Road and you may also want to take a saltwater dip at St. George's Bay.

If other areas of the island have a distinctly Celtic or Scottish feel the areas along the Marconi and Fleur-de-Lis Trails are decidedly French. Here you can lose yourself in charming fishing villages chalk full of Acadian culture--just be sure to sample the local cuisine and its specialities like T'chaudes. You may also want to visit the historic village of Louisbourg. The Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive reveals the area's gorgeous waters, coves and islands, as well as its unique tidal waves. This is the perfect place to depart on a boat cruise and to keep an eye out for animals like bald eagles, deer and foxes.

Not convinced? In 2009 Travel + Leisure magazine named Cape Breton one of its top three islands in the world and named it number one to visit in North America.
