Ottawa is another great option for a place from which to rent an RV and begin your motorhome road trip. Canada's capital city lies on the southern banks of the Ottawa River (which forms the boundary between Ontario and Quebec) where it meets the Rideau River and canal. Connected by several bridges to Quebec, and the city of Gatineau on the northern shores of the Ottawa River, the two cities and surrounding areas are known as the National Capital Region (NCR).
The government provides most of the employment in the city with many of the spectacular gothic buildings being used by government offices and administrations.
The Parliament Buildings are virtually the only place you'll see a Mountie in full dress uniform in Canada these days!
The oldest part of the city is known as Lower Town and sits in the area between the canal and the rivers. Across the canal to the westlies Centretown, or Downtown, the city's financial and commercial hub. Between Centretown and the Ottawa River, Parliament Hill is home to many of Ottawa's landmark government buildings, such as the Peace Tower. As of June 2007, the Rideau Canal, which stretches 202 km (126 mi) to Kingston, Fort Henry and four Martello towers in the Kingston area was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
