Chile Is full of fantastic places to visit for holiday makers with a motorhome rental or campervan hire vehicle. Here are 10 places where you might like to try, and hopefully there will be something here for everyone.
Visit the Atacama Desert and be swept away by its salt marshes, arid landscape, and silent volcanoes. This a really atmospheric place to visit. This is the world’s driest dessert, so come prepared.
Spend the night star gazing at Collowara, with its observatory. The area is so lacking in light pollution that visitors can see glimpses of the galaxies. The observatory here is considered one of the best and most accessible places to visit if you enjoy stargazing.
Take a cruise along Chile’s Inside Passage to see some magnificent glaciers, fjords, and icebergs. Bring a thermos flask and pack you thermals, you will not fail to be amazing at the staggering views all around you.
Put on a hard hat and visit Humberstone a former nitrate-mining town in the far north of the country. It’s more like a ghost town than a mining town today with abandoned homes and an eerie emptiness, but a good insight into the history of this area.
For beautiful old architecture visit La Serena, for colonial buildings and beautiful churches. This is also the place to come if you like beaches, but not in January and February unless you want to be like a sardine.
Take a hike to the giant statue of the Virgin Mary at the top of Cerro San Cristobal in Santiago. From here there is a spectacular panorama over the city below. On the way down visit the district of Barrio Bella Vistas for some quirky houses.
Stop off at Concha y Toro, one of Chile’s oldest wine producers. Famous for their Carmenere red wine, the winery is just outside the capital, so you won’t have too far to travel.
Take a boat ride out to the Juan Fernandez Islands; this is where Alexander Selkirk, a Scotsman, was marooned in the early 18th century. He is the man behind Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe.
If you enjoy trekking, or you just appreciate fantastic scenery, come to the Torres del Paine National Park. The parks jagged peaks are the image that springs to mind when you mention Chile, the area is so unspoilt and clean, you’ll feel totally refreshed.
