The land of snow, reindeer, sauna’s and Father Christmas, Finland is an outdoor paradise.  There are more trees than people here and over 188,000 lakes and islands making it an ideal place for a motorhome rental or campervan hire outside the winter season.  Most Finns like to make the best of the limited sunlight, so when spring and summer arrive they are out in the country to fish and swim so you will find no end of campsites and rest places.  First we’ll look at some of the basic information useful to visitors.

The Weather

Most people think of Finland a land of ice and snow, quite right, but Spring and Autumn can be surprisingly mild and summers are warm and sunny, with daytime temperatures ranging between 25-30ºC (77-86°F).  In the land of the midnight sun the sun never totally sets in summer so this is when the locals and visitors take full advantage of the light for late-night sports, barbecues and parties.   On the other hand between November and March temperatures plummet to (minus) - 40ºC/104ºF with short days and no sun in the far north.  The area receives its fair share of rain which is evenly distributed throughout the year and because of this during June and July the forested areas are home to both humans, gnats and mosquitoes, so insect repellent is very important.

Clothing

In summer lightweight clothing in the daytime is ideal, but long sleeves and long trousers are advisable in the evenings. Waterproof clothes are useful throughout the year and a hat with a netting veil is useful when trekking in the forests in the summer to keep out the mosquitoes.

The Language

There are two official languages in Finland, Finnish and Swedish, however most people in the south and those further north involved in the tourist industry will speak English as a second language.

The Terrain

Finland is very diverse, there are the cities such as Helsinki which are modern, comfortable and bustling, the forests, lakes and coastline and then further north is the land of the Sami people, the inhabitants of Lapland.  Here you will find bear, elk and reindeer roaming free, and pike and salmon in the crystal clear waters.  It is also one of the places to witness on of the greatest spectacles of the world, where for almost 200 nights of the year the Aurora Borealis or northern lights perform at their best

Places To Stay

Finland was made for campervan hire and motorhome rental and there are a large number of campsites all over the country usually open between June and September.  The country also has an Allmansratten or Everyman’s Right which allows free roaming so as long as you are careful and are responsible, spending the night in the open isn’t an issue.

Handy Points To Know

In Finland headlights should be used at all times, the speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h outside towns and in uninhabited areas and 120 km/h on motorways and trams always have right of way. Unleaded fuel is known as lyijyton polttaine and many fuel stations stay open 24 hrs.  Distances are great so it is always best to make sure you have a full tank if you are venturing into the more remote part of the country in your motorhome rental or campervan hire.

Finland Geography
