India - General Info
So, you’ve been everywhere that you can possibly imagine in a motorhome rental or campervan hire vehicle, or have you? What about India? It is possible, so why not be one of the first intrepid explorers to check out this wonderfully diverse country.
Visiting India on any type of holiday needs good planning, not only to make sure you see some great sights, but also to make sure you get your visas arranged and your IDP or International Driving Permit arranged with a driving association in your home country. India is not a place to just turn up and hope to be able to rent a vehicle, so you also need to make sure that you arrange your motorhome rental or campervan hire in plenty of time and thorough a reputable company.
Things to know.
Make sure you plan your visit outside the Monsoon season, travel in rural areas, as well as more built up ones, ca be extremely hazardous with roads becoming rivers and causing landslides, see Indian Geography for details.
The citizens of India drive on the left…most of the time. The national highways are probably the most well kept, although they can still be narrow in places and often potholed, and the side roads range from compacted dirt to rubble. Other road hazards, not including other drivers are animals, including elephants and cows, which often use the highways as somewhere to sleep or just rest a while. Remember that the cow is sacred in India which means that the person in front of you may stop dead to avoid such an animal, or even worse, the vehicle travelling towards you may swerve into your path.
There is a new highway known as the Golden Quadrilateral, which connects the four major cities Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai in a series of four laned roads. The road is almost complete, apart from a few sections here and there, and when it’s finished, they intend on start work making it into six lanes!
Your next concern will probably be where you are going to spend the night, after all, India is not known for its luxurious campsites, but surprisingly you will find some very good sites not just at the beach resorts, but near the cities and the parks too. The Indian Tourist office at www.incredibleindia.org is a good place to start, not only for planning your journey but also for information on medical issues, tips, and itinerary suggestions.
Driving around India can be erratic, the driving standards and heavy traffic are not the easiest to deal with. However, if you’ve previous experience of the country, or you have experience in handling similar situations why not give India a try, you’ll certainly turn some heads!

You may not find facilities, but what you will find are welcoming people who are more than eager to try their BBC English on you, its lots of fun and you will make life long friends.
India is the seventh largest country in the world, with the second largest population. To the north it borders Nepal and China, to the east Bangladesh and Myanmar, to the south the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, and to the west, Pakistan. Everywhere you go there is great diversity, in both the landscape, and the people. A visit to India is like visiting many different counties.
