Motorhoming in the Italian Lakes
Italy’s Lake District has three major lakes and many other smaller ones. Garda, Maggiore and Como are the three most popular and great places to visit for people with motorhome rental vehicles or campervan hire. These are cosmopolitan resorts and where the city dwellers from the north like to spend time so hotels are grand and expensive.
Services for Motorhome Rental vehicles.
As with most of the main tourist areas in Italy, Como has a good choice of places to stay. There are 2 Aree di Sosta in Como itself and others at various locations around the lake. The first is a well equipped facility; the other is a paved area outside the Police station! With a choice of over 35 campsites, the majority open all year, you will never be stuck for choice (unless you come in the summer)
Top things to see and do
Visit the town of Como and take one of the signposted walking routes which give excellent views of the lake and the town. Top Tip. This area is very popular at the weekends and during July and August. For visitors with a motorhome rental vehicle or campervan hire vehicle try and avoid these times, come when the roads are quieter, it will make for a better experience.
Visit the most beautiful town on the lakes, Bellagio. Difficult to get to in a large vehicle, take the passenger ferry link from Como town and visit for the day. Lake Como is shaped like a Y and Bellagio is at the point where the three branches meet, it has amazing views and a picture perfect promenade with shops a, bars and restaurants. Visit the pretty Villa Melzi for its beautiful gardens.
One for the girls. One of the famous residents of the town of Laglio on Lake Como is George Clooney. Catch a glimpse of the film star in the town where he regularly jogs along the side of the lake. Be careful not to stake out his Villa L’Oleandra however because the local police now fine people for loitering.
One for the boys. Tell everyone you’ve visited Villa del Balbianell in Lenno for its beautiful treasures, but don’t tell them the real reason you went there, to visit the set used for one of the Star Wars Films.
Just for fun… Pretend to be one of the rich and famous for an hour. Hire one of the motor cruises and take to the lake. If you have less money there are also some great steam cruisers.
Spend some time on one of the lake beaches, drive around the whole lake to see the many different villages or take to the water for a different view of the beautiful towns from the water. Whatever you choose to do on a holiday to the Italian Lakes you will experience some very beautiful scenery.
