Huntly Campervan Hire Holiday
Straddling both sides of the Waikato River and linked by the Tainui Bridge, is Huntly at the heart of New Zealand’s largest coalfields. Underground and opencast mines still operate here, along with its massive coal and gas fired power station.
Huntly’s coal seams were first used by early settlers, and by Waikato River gunboats during the New Zealand Wars. The town’s first commercial mines were established in 1876, and in 1914 The Ralphs Mine, now the site of the town hall, was the scene of a tragic disaster with 43 miners losing their lives.
To find out more visit the Waikato Coalfields Museum; it gives a good account of town’s coalmining history and has an array of interesting displays.
