Christchurch Flora & Fauna
Whether you’re wandering through the Botanic Gardens amongst bees and butterflies, or spotting dolphins and seals from the walkway at Godley Head, the wonder of nature in Christchurch is never far away.
Other unique encounters with wildlife include the Southern Encounter Aquarium where eels, trout, marine fish and sharks are found; Orana Wildlife Park’s line-up of rare and endangered species including tuatara, a NZ reptile whose evolution dates back to dinosaur days, and the elusive kiwi bird who numbers are ever-dwindling.
When you pick up your Christchurch Campervan Hire near the airport, stop in at The Antarctic Centre nearby, which offers a chance to get up close and personal with rescued little blue penguins, rehabilitated yet unable to be released back into the wild due to physical disabilities. The centre also offers interpretative displays on the Antarctic including a storm simulator, Hagglund rides, and a camp site demonstrating how scientists operate out in the field.
Meanwhile Christchurch’s Willowbank Wildlife Reserve encourages a more hands-on experience with its range of farm animals, and by night you can see rare nocturnal creatures here, including kiwis.
Drive a little further afield to Lyttelton, then park up your Rental Campervan and join a Black Cat Cruise, which provides the chance to spy upon the rare Hector’s dolphin, the world’s smallest and rarest marine dolphin with a population of around 4000 individuals, plus other highlights including seals, penguins, a variety of sea birds including many species of cormorant, more commonly known in New Zealand as shags.
