Canvastown Campervan Hire Holiday
The old goldmining community of Canvastown is at the edge of the Richmond Forest Range, a popular place to pan for gold, angle for trout, and discover the past at Canvastown’s historic hotel, The Old Trout.
It was built in 1898 after the former hotel, the Pelorus was demolished in the same year. At the time it boasted all mod cons – hot and cold running water, and even gas lighting.
Local lore has it that the first person to discover gold here in 1860 was one Mrs Pope – whilst she was washing clothes in the Wakamarina River! This came much to the surprise of her husband, who along with his brothers, had just opened a sawmill on the site where The Old Trout stands today.
