Makarora is a place where the long grassy flats and sprawling high country stations give way to the silvery beeches of the Blue Pools, and the three-hour Blue Valley Track, leading to Stewart Falls.

The region offers a number of other hikes ranging from one day walks through to challenging four to five day tramps, overnighting in backcountry huts along the way. But if this all sounds far too energetic you can always hop aboard a scenic helicopter flight, or take a 50 kilometre jet ride up the Makarora and Wilkin Rivers through native beech forest following an ancient river valley.

Alternatively, if you’re game you can combine a variety of outdoor pursuits in a four-hour or full day wilderness experience.
