Queenstown Motorhome Rental Road Trips
Queenstown’s gentler side can also be experienced by following almost any road heading out of the township in your rental motorhome. The road to Glenorchy, at the head of the fated giant, is a classic scenic drive, hugging the waterline all the way to the Dart River.
This is best explored by jetboat or by traversing a rutted and unsealed 4wd route across fords, through dripping beech forest and breathtaking mountain scenery to the delightfully named area of Paradise. Head south of Queenstown towards the giant’s feet and you will encounter a landscape of high country stations, towering mountains, flat green fields dotted with trees, and sprawling farmhouses, many of which have been passed down through the generations.
Alternatively take the gorge road to Arrowtown, a quaint gold-mining town complete with many of its original miners’ cottages, saloons and nineteenth century churches, and take a four-wheel drive tour upriver to the ghost gold-mining town of Macetown, before driving the scenic Crown Range Road (please check with your motorhome rental supplier though as many companies do not allow rental vehicles on this road), through the dry rounded tussock lands of the Cardrona Valley with its old 1863 pub, and on to Wanaka where a whole host of new adventures await…
