Punakaiki is a township with a permanent holiday air; nikau palms cling obstinately to layered rock escarpments, adding tropical appeal, and locals and visitors alike amble along the beach collecting pieces of polished, pure-white quartz.

But Punakaiki’s most famous attraction is its stunning Pancake Rocks & Blowholes, where – if you’ve timed it right – you will get to see high tide at the blowholes in a moderate to good swell. A 20 minute loop walk leads to a series of giant pancake-looking rocks formed 30 million years ago.

When its waters are not in flood, kayaking on the Pororari River is a popular activity. Alternatively, the two-hour return hike up the Pororari River Track through the beautiful limestone gorge provides access to some good swimming holes.

Most drivers rent campervans in Christchurch or rent campervans in Queenstown as there is not a Punakaiki Campervan Hire Depot.
