The city of Porto, also referred to as Oporto, is Portugal’s second largest city built along the banks of the Douro River. The city’s historical centre the Ribeira district is a UNESCO World Heritage site so there are plenty of beautiful buildings and winding streets to get lost in, perhaps not the best thing to do with a motorhome rental or campervan hire vehicle, find a place to park and get lost on foot instead.

The nearest Aire to Porto is at Vila Nova de Gaia, 4 miles south of the city.  Situated right on the beach the site has a bus stop for the city centre right outside, so no transport problems.  There are also plenty of other campsites both north and south of the city, as well as a few ‘free’ spots where you can spend the night.

Top things to see and do

Take a Cruise along the River Douro.  Cruises can be anything from a couple of hours to an all day affair and there are a number of companies who ply the water.  If you take one of the longer cruises which visit the upper Douro you will get to see some fantastic scenery with ancient vineyards and very rural landscapes, something that you wouldn’t even see from your motorhome.

One for the girls. Take a tour of the Casa da Musica or House of Music, Porto’s best music venue. The tour goes behind the scenes and includes the extremely beautiful blue and white tiled VIP room.  If you have enough time stop and see an event here too, there are a huge variety to choose from take your pick from anything between classical and dance music.

One for the boys. Visit the Fundacao Serralves and Museu de Arte Contemporanea. Situated in the huge Fundacao Serralves Park, the museum is packed with contemporary art and there’s also an Art Deco villa.  In the centre of the park you will find a tea house and some rather ‘different’ sculptures such as a blood red pair of pruning sheers, don’t ask!

Just for fun… visit Solar Vinho do Porto.  This 18th century villa is said to be the best location for port tasting.  Visit in the late afternoon when the sun is going down for some great views over the river whilst tasting a wide variety of port’s accompanied by a few nibbly bits.

If you have a campervan hire or motorhome rental spend a few days here.  Porto is a beautiful city with some wonderful architectural buildings and bridges, nice beaches and the river, the nightlife both in the restaurants, bars and clubs has a great atmosphere too.
