Bordering Spain to the north and east and with 586 miles of coastline to the south and west, Portugal and its Atlantic islands of the Azores, Porto Santo and Madeira are all wonderful places to enjoy motorhome rental and campervan hire.  The country is split in two by the River Tajeo with the north having a combination of maintains and plateaus and the south, as far as the Algarve being rolling countryside.  The Algarve in the very south of the country has some incredible fine sandy beaches; as has the island of Porto Santo, as well as some outstanding rock formations.  The beaches are clean and the sea is turquoise but remember, this is the Atlantic so the water can be rather ‘bracing’ at times which is very welcome during the summer months but no so in the winter!  Portugal’s coastline is not only an attraction for human visitors the area around Rio de Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal, is a series of lagoons rich in sea birds and fish.

Portugal is also popular for another reason, its climate.  Distinctly Mediterranean, the mainland temperature ranges between 12°C/53°F in the mountains of the north to 18 °C/64 °F in the south during the winter and 25°C/77°F and considerably higher during the summer in both the north and south.   The islands have a more stable climate with temperatures hovering around 20°C/68°F summer and winter.  The climate and the beaches of the south are what make Portugal so popular with the northern Europeans, during the winter months many of them leave home and spend up to six months living along the coast here.  The large amount of foreign visitors means that the campsites are open all year round, so for visitors with motorhome rental or campervan hire there will always be a fully serviced site available for a night or more.

For visitors who are new to Portugal head for some of the most popular spots of Albuferia, a family friendly resort that blends new facilities with the traditional village, Alvor, with its cobbled streets, Armacao de Pera with the best restaurants and ruined castle, Lagos (pronounced La gosh) for rugged cliffs and sandy beaches and Praia da Luz situated between whitewashed villages and volcanic cliffs, this is a firm favourite for its huge beach and large number of golf courses nearby.

Golf courses.  If you are a lover of golf then you will already have heard about the area around the Algarve.  This is probably the third reason why Portugal is so popular in the winter, the incredible amount of green space from practice greens to championship golf courses, if you love the idea of motorhoming and a good game of golf then Portugal will be your idea of heaven.

Even if you don’t love golf, if you enjoy beaches, cities and the great outdoors you’ll love Portugal, it’s the ideal place for motorhome rentals or campervan hire giving you choice to move freely and at your own pace to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
