Slovenia Motorhome Rental: Top 10 Places to Visit
Unlike many countries in Europe, it isn’t immediately obvious what Slovenia is associated with, France has the Eiffel Tower, the UK has Big Ben and Italy has the Vatican, but what about Slovenia? Well, that’s part of its charm; there are great things to see here, it’s just that not everybody knows about them.
Here are ten great places to visit with a motorhome rental or campervan hire vehicle; the rest will be up to you to discover for yourself.
Lake Bled. A picture perfect location, this is even better than you could ever have imagined. Shaped like a teardrop, the crystal clear blue green lake has an island right in the middle topped with a church. Check out the views from the cliff top castle or take a boat ride to see the view from a different perspective.
Lake Bohinj. No apology for having two lakes as Lake Bohinj is just as beautiful and great for swimming. There are some good walks and lots of activities to try if you are feeling energetic. If not, take the cable car to the top of Mount Vogel and walk along the gorge to see the Savica Falls.
Predjama Castle, Postojna. An incredible fortress built inside a cave, there are guided tours available, but remember to pack a jumper, it can be cold inside.
Skocjan Caves. If you visit in the spring you will have an unforgettable experience at these caves because that’s when a raging river runs through the cave system. Stand on the bridge in the middle of the route and you’ll be ‘swept away’, not literally! Entry here is by guided tour only.
Piran. Piran is the ‘Little Italy’ of Slovenia, right on the Adriatic it’s a cute little seaside resort with something else Italy is famous for, ice cream.
Ljubljana. This may be the countries capital but it’s safe and welcoming. Easy to explore on foot, wander the streets and squares and take in the great views from the castle.
Postojna Caves. These are Slovenia’s most famous caves. Take the train through part of the complex or walk if you prefer. If you choose the train prepare to duck, it can be quite close in places!
The Port of Koper. Visit this historic port town for its cathedral, loggia and the Praetor’s Palace, there is also the Roman style Carmin Rotunda, well worth a visit.
Bled Castle. Standing 100m above the lake the castle has not only a good view point of the lake but also a great place to visit in its own right. Arranged as a museum the castle holds a large collection of weapons and armoury.
Vintgar Gorge. Still around Lake Bled the Gorge has some incredible waterfalls and fantastic scenery, in theory the walk should only be around half an hour, but if you stop to admire the views you could be there all day.
Whether you choose a campervan hire or motorhome rental you will find some unforgettable views and welcoming people on your holiday to Slovenia.
