Cape Town and the Western Cape offer some great camping sites. There’s so much choice from nature reserves and wildlife parks, to coastal sites, and places along popular tourist routes. Then you’ve got everything from the all singing all dancing sites with absolutely everything you need, to the tiny farm sites with just basic facilities; so whatever type of trip and experience you’re taking, there are lots of places to choose from.
Top things to see and do
Table Mountain. Breathtaking in more ways than one, of you choose to walk to the top! If you’re moderately fit the walk will take you about an hour and a half, but make sure you wear proper walking boots and take water, this is not a stroll in the park. If you’re not feeling that energetic take the cable car for some amazing views. Once at the top there are some incredible views out over the city and the ocean (as long as it’s not a cloudy day of course). There are also some good walking trails and a restaurant on the top.
Winelands. There are over 200 cellars, all easily accessible from Cape Town, where you can sample the beautiful South African varieties. Take a tour if you enjoy your tasting, or alternatively stay overnight in Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek or Wellington.
One for the girls. This is a difficult one, there’s the Kirstenbosch Gardens, Cape Point or the V&A Waterfront but as this is the best place for shopping we’re going for the waterfront. It has everything, over 50 restaurants and bars where you can sit outside and watch the ships, or the tourists. You can shop 'til you drop, with even luxury goods at incredible prices, or you can visit the Aquarium with creatures from every continent.
One for the boys. Take the boat trip to Robben Island, now a South African World Heritage Site. The Robben Island prison buildings are now a museum where you can take a tour of the jail where Nelson Mandela was held captive. See his tiny cell, as well as hearing tales of the other inmates by the former inmates themselves. A sombre but amazing place to visit.
Just for fun… or not! Go shark cage diving. Get to see sharks up close from inside your cage. Following a full safety briefing set out to sea and even before you go down you’ll see sharks circling the boat. When you arrive at a suitable point, enjoy the experience of being lowered into the water and coming face to face with a great white….scary.
Cape Town is a wonderful city to visit, there are so many choices for visitors with a motorhome rental or campervan hire. Take time to look around the city and then head out to some of the beautiful places in the Western Cape.
