Motorhoming in Spain – General Information

The land of Sangria, flamenco, beautiful architecture and heroic bullfighters, Spain is an ideal place for a motorhome rental.  The roads are good, the signposting straightforward and in the majority of the towns there will always be someone who speaks English.  The country has always been a popular place to ‘holiday’ and here’s why.

The weather.  Spain has very mild winters and hot summers which means that campervan hire of motorhome rental is very popular, it also means that the campsites and rest areas are open all year.  The north is more temperate with temperatures ranging from 10 °C /50°F in winter to 23°C /73°F in summer and the south from 15°C /60°F in winter to 35°C /95°F + in summer.

The variety.  From the ‘green’ north to the Moorish south, Spain has some interesting places to visit and spend time.  The area around the north is relatively uncommercialised, with old castles and traditional villages, the area also has some important religious sites as well as very funky cities. The eastern coastline is where visitors in search of sandy beaches head for.  This is where Spain’s tourism started and there are still some resorts that have their high rise beach hotels along the mile long promenades.  Things have changed however; there are now water parks, high quality restaurants and sophisticated entertainment as well as the local markets selling straw donkeys!  The south is where Spain meets Morocco and the architecture and landscape changes.  The Sierra Nevada Mountains meet up with the coast and all along the coastline there are beautiful mountain villages and old cities. There are also the Balearic Islands, Majorca, Menorca, Formenterra and Ibiza, and the Canary Islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and the smaller islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, great places to visit in the winter as their location off the coast of Africa is the best guarantee of winter sunshine

Places to stay.  As well as the large choice of campsites Spain also offers campervan hire and motorhome rental vehicles some great places to spend anything from a few hours to a few nights, depending on their location.  The rest areas or Area as they are known in Spain are normally privately run and have differing levels of facilities.  In the cities they may just be covered or underground parking, not the best place to spend the night, but others have restaurants, shops and washing facilities.  There are also the rest stops along the motorway network; these tend to be less busy than other countries as many people choose the main roads to avoid paying the tolls. You may also check out cars videos for some inspiration. For Airport Transfer from Malaga Airport to Nerja, you can also check out the link.

For a truly diverse holiday with many opportunities to see something different, try a motorhome or campervan hire holiday in Spain

For more information on the Area’s visit the link below which gives detailed locations for motorhome and campervan stopovers.  The page is in Spanish but a translation tool will easily change it into something you can understand.
