Bilbao is the largest city in the Basque country, probably most famous for its museums the city is a nice introduction into the very diverse north of Spain.  Spend a week or more discovering the area in a campervan hire or motorhome rental vehicle or combine the green north with the sunny south for two very different sides of Spain.

There is one very pleasant Area on the outskirts of Bilbao with plenty of grassy places; rather different from some of the city sites.  There are also a number of camping sites both along the coast and inland which offer more facilities and the rest stops along the motorway.

Top things to see and do

Visit the Guggenheim Museum.  Even if you don’t like art, its worth just gong the exterior of Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum.  This is one of the most incredibly beautiful modern buildings ever to have been built.  Visited by well over 10,000,000 people, the museum has some beautiful things inside as well.  The collection runs from the mid 20th century to the current day and concentrates on post war paintings and sculptures from Europe and America.

Visit one of the Rioja vineyards. Leave the campervan or motorhome on the site and take a tour of one or two of the calaos in the area.  If you liked the architecture of the Guggenheim museum then one stop has to be the Marques de Riscal winery. The oldest winery in Rioja, the newly remodelled cellar and winery was also designed by Frank Gehry. Tastings are normally accompanied by tasty tapas and there’s an opportunity to taste and buy some great wines.

One for the girls.   Visit the Old Quarter of Bilbao with over 800 shops where you will be able to find anything from lace to full length evening gowns in the boutiques and department stores.

One for the boys.  Book a lunch or dinner for someone special at the restaurant called ‘a table’.  A small traditional restaurant serving menu tasters will allow you to try the local specialities at very reasonable prices in a nice atmosphere

Just for fun… Do all your holiday souvenir shopping at the local Sunday market.  Visit one of the travelling markets that come to the city on a Sunday morning and mix with the locals buying anything from a chicken to a car tyre.

The area around Bilbao has something for everyone, backed by beautiful mountains and with an unspoilt coastline the area is rich in folklore, history, inspiring art and some of the best restaurants in the country.  Why not try this unspoilt area for a motorhome rental or campervan hire, it’s a nice way of travelling the area in comfort and at your own pace.
