Sweden is the home of ……..Abba!!! As well as Ikea, Volvo’s, Greta Garbo, meatballs and fresh air.  You’re probably not going to waste any of your precious holidays shopping for household items, even though in a motorhome rental or campervan hire you would have room to put a flat pack wardrobe or a sofa.  This is where you can discover some wonderful open countryside and modern, clean cities and open roads; great for driving.

Sweden is one of the countries that has a right to roam, even onto private property, so there are plenty of free camping spots where can stay for the night.  There is also a large number of Aree di Sosta and campsites, the Swedes are very fond of outdoor living, so the facilities and number of sites are excellent.

Driving your motorhome rental or campervan hire from the middle of the country southwards will be a very quick and easy drive, if you are travelling from the centre northwards the distances between the towns and villages is much greater, although there is less traffic on the road, as the locals tend to fly or take the train.

If you enjoy trying to speak a little of the local language, it can be quite fun.  Many of the locals like to try out their English, but beware that some words that we may consider offensive mean something totally different to them, so if it doesn’t make much sense, you’ll know why!

The Swedish equivalent of both hello and goodbye is ‘hej’ pronounced hay, please is ‘snälla’, pronounced snell la, and thank you, ‘tack’ pronounced tuck, not too difficult, is it?

Good to know

Most of the time driving in Sweden is safe, but there are some dangers which you should be aware of, especially if you are travelling into the north of the country.

The biggest danger is…wild animals!  Some of the main roads have fences to protect them, but they do have breaks to allow the deer, moose, and even reindeer to cross.  Take special care towards dusk, as the animals are moving towards the lakes, and during the hunting season.

In most European countries it’s possible to have a glass of wine or beer with your lunch without worrying, which is not the case in Sweden.  Not even one, at anytime the police can insist on a blood alcohol test.

The last tip is about other road users, well large trucks.  In Sweden lorries carry long loads of timber and can be up to 25 meters in length.  There are no signs telling you these lorries are extra long, so overtaking is not advised unless you can see right into the distance.  It’s also not uncommon for them to use the small narrow roads whilst fully loaded, so beware and remember where you saw that last pull in, you made need to reverse!

Sweden is a very pleasant holiday destination for visitors with motorhome rental or campervan hire vehicles, its safe, clean and lots of free places to stay for the night.
