The capital of Switzerland, Bern and its historic old town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The medieval city is filled with fountains, sandstone buildings, narrow streets and ancient towers.  The city is set around the River Aare and although there are very good public transport links, it’s a good city to explore on foot.

2.5 Km south of the city at Wabern is Camping Eichholz.  The site is perfect for visitors with a motorhome rental or campervan hire vehicles, with either hard standing, or grassy pitches to choose from.  The site is open from April until October and, as you would expect, has very clean facilities, shop and restaurant.

Top things to see and do.

Rosegarten or Rose Garden.  Even if you don’t like looking round gardens, the rose gardens are very beautiful.  If you’re still not convinced, then the view of the city will make your walk up here worthwhile.  From up here you can see right over the city, river, and to the mountains beyond.  This is one of the best places to take photos.  The walk up here from the river is quite steep, but once you arrive there is café and a refreshing fountain.

Einsteinhaus or the Einstein Museum at 49 Kramgasse.  This is where one of the Worlds most famous men lived with his wife, and has been dedicated to commemorating his childhood.  There are also some interesting displays on his scientific discoveries, but if you want to see things in more detail visit the History museum.

The Clock Tower is one of Bern’s biggest tourist attractions.  Originally it was the city’s west gate, used to imprison prostitutes; but then in 1527 a very special clock was added.  Ever since then on the hour it has been giving a show of dancing mechanical figures including bears and a crowing rooster, which is the finale.  Take a tour inside the tower for a better view of the clock mechanism.

The Gurten is another of Bern’s ‘top’ spots for vistas.  Take the Gurtenbahn funicular up to the top, and then climb the viewing tower, which does sway slightly in the wind, for some terrific views of the city. There are also some very pleasant walks here too.

Bern is a very beautiful and historic capital city, and as with most things in Switzerland, it is clean and very well preserved.  For visitors with a motorhome rental or campervan hire vehicle the site on the city’s outskirts is a very pleasant place to stay, and with the frequent and punctual public transport, it’s a breeze to visit the city without having to drive.
