Geneva is the second most populated city in Switzerland; it’s also the seat of democracy, diplomacy and home to international organisations such as the Red Cross and the UN.  This is an ideal place to stat a motorhome rental or campervan hire holiday; there are many towns and villages nearby to be explored, so you won’t have to drive too far when you first arrive.

If you arrive at Geneva airport and decide you really don’t want to go very far, you won’t have to as there is a rest stop almost at the end of the runway, quite literally!  This is the only one in the city, so if you want to stay here, this is it.  Having said that it’s small but has everything you’ll need, and if you don’t fancy spending the night at the end of a runway, there is a choice of campsites outside the city with good public transport links, which means that you can enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep!

Top things to see and do

Take a trip on Lake Geneva.  This is top of the list for most visitors, on, around, or even in the lake, depending on what interests you.  If you want to take to the water, there are lots of cruises to choose from, there are short ones of up to an hour, or for a better idea of the area, the longer ones visit towns such as Evian and Lausanne and can last for up to three hours.  Sit back and enjoy the scenery as it passes slowly by, if you don’t like the water then take a train ride, around the lake.  The rail network is fast and efficient, and there are plenty of stops.

Have you picture taken at the Jet d'Eau, Geneva's most prominent landmark.  This huge fountain sends water 140 metres into the air at a rate of 500 litres of water per second.  This is the famous symbol of Geneva which dates back to 1886, and if you’re feeling brave, or hot, run underneath the waterfalls, but make sure you are dressed appropriately because if you’re not you’ll be completely soaked.

If you enjoy books by Dan Brown, you will have heard of the CERN Institute.  Incredibly you can take tours here too, there are two kinds.  For those who are very intelligent, there are the professional tours taken by physics students from the institute; a word of warning, even scientists have said that the physics experiments were well over their heads, but there is also a Microcosm exhibition of particle physics where you can play with electricity and take part in lots of different experiments, and it’s a lot easier to understand.

Geneva is another of Switzerland’s beautiful cities.  Just like the others, it is clean and easy to get around, and the lake and the nearby towns and villages make it an excellent base for a motorhome rental or campervan hire holiday in Switzerland.
