Motorhoming in Lugano
The historic town of Lugano sits on the northern shores of….. Lake Lugano. This very popular town has some lovely mountain views, a traffic free centre and stacks of ancient buildings, built in true Lombardy Italian style. There are lots of free attractions here, parks and gardens, the lake; although you will have to pay to use some of the beaches, and the promenade, sit here in the evening and watch the local do their daily ‘passeggiata’. This is an extremely popular tourist area, so will find lots of restaurants, bars and all the essentials for a perfect holiday
Services for Motorhome Rental vehicles
Lugano doesn’t have any suitable places to stop over for motorhome rentals or campervan hire vehicles, but there are a large number to choose from in the small towns and villages that line the shores of Lake Lugano. There is something for everyone, from the very basic 1 or two star sites with limited facilities, to the more up market ‘all singing all dancing’ sites with swimming pools and private beaches, so whatever your budget, you won’t have any problems finding somewhere to stay.
Top things to see and do
Parco Civico Ciani. This is a green oasis on the shores of Lake Ceresio. A quiet place with some nice walks through magnificent woodland.
Monte Brè is the closest mountain to Lugano. You can get right to the top by the funicular railway from Cassarate. When you reach the top there are wonderful panoramic views over the town and the lake below, you can even see into Italy from here.
Monte San Salvatore. Take the funicular railway to the top, also known as the ‘sugarloaf’, and then take your time walking back down again along the panoramic footpath to Carona. There’s plenty of public transport if you prefer not to walk all the way back.
San Lorenzo Cathedral. Positioned right above the old town this is a traditional cathedral built in a Lombardy Renaissance style. If you love old buildings there are some beautiful frescoes and valuable Baroque artefacts inside.
Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli is another place to visit for wonderful frescoes from the Renaissance, this former monastery church dates back to the 1500’s, it’s a real gem.
Visit the Museo Cantonale d'Arte, which is home to some famous paintings by Renoir and Degas, not only are the paintings beautiful, the building is too.
Lugano, and the beautiful lake, have been attracting visitors with motorhome rental and campervan hire vehicles for many years. The choice of places to stay, the pleasant climate, as well as the beautiful views, is what makes people return here again and again.
