Las Vegas has a reputation as “Sin City,” a place of gambling, hedonism, strippers, shotgun weddings and rock’n’roll. It is not misplaced and you will certainly find those things there, but there is more to it- it has a fascinating history as a pop-up city in the desert, and is home to museums, parks and theatre venues. Located in the Nevada desert, it is in close proximity to some amazing natural features.

For most people, ‘the Strip’ is what is pictured as the epitome of Las Vegas. It is a 4.2 mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard South, home to some of the most spectacular hotels, resorts and casinos. Interestingly, the Strip is not actually in the city of Las Vegas but rather the towns of Paradise and Winchester, both south of the official city limits. It has been designated an All-American Road, and is the only stretch of road to be a scenic route after dark, with all the buildings aglow. Driving the Strip after dark is a must-do whilst you are in Las Vegas. Along here you will find the spectacular dancing fountains of the Bellagio, a replica Eiffel Tower and a replica of the Saint Mark’s Campanile complete with canals. Entertainment is endless here. Aside from the bars and casinos, the hotels are spectacular and try to one-up each other when it comes to entertainment- pedestrians gather to watch the Bellagio fountains, the volcano at the mirage and the pirate battles at Treasure Island. Circus Circus houses not only a big top but a theme park and an RV Park- so you can stay right on the Strip with your motorhome rental!

Shopping is great in Las Vegas, as it is a hub for factory outlet malls. The two most notable are Las Vegas Premium Outlets North and Las Vegas Premium Outlets South, both with around 150 stores. There are also many normal shopping malls such as the Fashion Show Mall and the outdoor Town Square.

The list of things to do in Las Vegas could go on forever. There are many fascinating museums which include a Madame Tussaud’s, a Neon Museum and an “Erotic Heritage Museum.” There are unique attractions such as the “Goretorium,” a graphic haunted house, and an exhibition of dissected human bodies. Animal lovers can visit the Shark Reef Aquarium, Las Vegas Zoo and the Flamingo Garden which has not just flamingos but other exotic birds. There is an exhibition of Titanic artifacts, an indoor skydiving wind tunnel, circuses, variety shows, cabaret, comedy shows, tribute shows and much, much more!

Around the city limits the fun doesn’t stop. There are hiking trails in the scenic Red Rock Canyon just to the west of the city and you can hire ATVs and ride the dunes at the Valley of Fire State Park to the northeast. There are several stables where you can go horseback riding in the desert and for watersports, just out of town on the Lake Mead Parkway is Las Vegas Bay and the Lake Mead National Recreational Area.

From Las Vegas it is not far to one of the United States’ most famous landmarks, the incredible Grand Canyon. This is surrounded by the Grand Canyon National Park in which there are plenty of places to view the natural wonder. If you want to splurge, there are many companies running helicopter tours of the canyon. To the north and across the border in California is Yosemite National Park, a huge and diverse area of wilderness first protected in 1864. Cities within a day’s drive of of Las Vegas include Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, San Diego and Salt Lake City.
