Los Angeles, city of Angels, is possibly one of the world’s most famous locations. Unlike the Londons and Romes of this world, Los Angeles has recent history to thank for its heritage and fame, namely the movie industry which has exploded in the city over the last century. Even as early as 1921, 80% of the world’s film industry was concentrated in L.A. Now, it is a sprawling city not only full of movie stars and emntertainment, but beaches, bikinis, nightlife, shopping, eating and more. Los Angeles is not everyone’s idea of a holiday, but one thing is certain- it will not leave you bored.

Campervan rental pickup for most rental suppliers will be near LAX, the city’s main airport. Close to the beach and the city centre, your road trip will be off to a great start. The spread-out city has plenty of RV parks, be they by the beach in Malibu, near the lakes to the east of the city or near Disneyland in Anaheim and Orange County. This makes it simple to stay around for a few days and explore before heading out.

Movie-related attractions are based around Hollywood, just north of central LA. The famous Hollywood sign on the hills is a must-see which is hard to miss, and another landmark is the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard, a sidewalk inset with star panels honouring the best of the moviemaking profession. Also along the Boulevard are Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the world’s most famous movie theatre, and Hollywood Wax Museum.

Another of Los Angeles’ biggest drawcards is Disneyland! California’s Disneyland is located in Anaheim, a suburb of Los Angeles, and it opened in 1955 and is the original Disney theme park. A day in Disneyland is a day in a different and magical world, with whimsical buildings, life-sized characters from Disney movies and of course, the rides.

Santa Monica near the city and Malibu up the coast to the north are Los Angeles’ most famous beachside areas, where tourists and locals like to swim, stroll, see and be seen. Huntington Beach is another well-known spot and popular surf beach, and further down the coast is the beach made famous by reality TV, Laguna Beach.

Other types of entertainment in Los Angeles include parks, a range of interesting museums, the Getty Centre with spectacular views of the L.A basin and the Pacific, and the many convention centres, theatres and stadiums with almost constant events and games happening, including the Staples Center, Dodger Stadium and Nokia Theatre. There are endless places to eat and drink, from fast food to gourmet food trucks to prestigious places like Ivy and Nobu where celebrities like to dine.

When you have seen all you can see in Los Angeles and it is time to hit the open road in your motorhome, there are options in all directions. Inland, it is less than a day’s drive to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, cultural wonder and natural wonder respectively. Along the coast to the south is San Diego, with its vast zoo, and the border with Mexico. To the north along the coast it is a short trek to San Francisco, and above that is prime road trip territory- the Napa Valley and Sonoma. This area is full of beautiful vineyards and redwood forests.
